Musical snow

When it snows, it seems for a moment as if the world stands still. A kind of peace descends upon the earth, creating a completely different feeling than the sensation you experience when rain or hail falls.

Snow immediately creates a positive feeling because it’s not really a nuisance like rain is; as long as it falls in manageable quantities. You don’t necessarily want to escape from it immediately, so you receive it with gratitude. It makes you look around at the new world. And soon, joy and lightheartedness arise as children engage in their snowball fights.
Smiles appear on faces, and for a moment, the world is no longer a dangerous place, but a playground.

As a child, I found snow magical. After snow had fallen everything suddenly sounded completely different. The acoustics of the world changed completely. Snow absorbs sound so well that an impression of silence can indeed arise. And when snow lies for a long time and becomes icy, sounds can sometimes carry very far.

In my booklet “Wintery Scenes,” with simple piano music, I attempted to capture the falling snow in notes in the piece called ‘Snow finally falling’. To musically capture the tranquility and magic of snow, I chose a couple of simple tricks. I explain them in this vlog:
